Wa Yas-a-lu~na Ka 'A-nil-Ma-hi~dh".  = "Wa" = And, "Yas-a-lu~na" = they ask, "Ka" = you, " 'A-ni" = about, "al-Ma-hi~dhi" = the menstruation, menses,
"Wa Yas-a-lu~na Ka 'A-nil-Ma-hi~dh" = And they asked you (O Muhammad) about the menstruation.
صلى = a Waqof Jaiz sign.
قُلْ هُوَ أَذًى = "Qul Hu-wa A-dzan",  = "Qul" = Say, "Hu-wa" = it is, "A-dzan" = injury, evil/defilement
فَاُعْتَزِلُواْ اُلنِّسَآءَ فِى اُلْمَحِيضِ = "Faa-ta-zi-lun~Ni-sa~~a Fil-Ma-hi~~dh",  = "Fa" = then, "ii-ta-zi-lu~" = you separate, isolate, "an~Ni-sa~~a" = the women, "Fi~" = in, during, "al-Ma-hi~dhi" =  the menstruation period.
"Qul Hu-wa A-dzanf~Faa-ta-zu-lun~Ni-sa~~a Fil-Ma-hi~~dh" = Say, "It is an injury/defilement/filth, thus, you should stay away from the women when they have their menstruation/menses.
(Imam Ahmad narrated from Anas r.a. that when the Jewish women had their menses, their husbands would not want to eat nor  sleep with them, and the companions asked the Prophet s.a.w. about it. Thence, Allah revealed this verse.
Before we take a look into this verse, let us have a look at what menstruation/menses is about. According to the Anatomist, when a healthy adult woman and is not pregnant, usually has a discharge of blood from the uterus that normally occurs every four weeks between puberty and menopause. Puberty comes at about between 12 - 15 years of age in  girls, (some girls are even earlier, about 9 years old). [When a girl has attained puberty/"Baligh"/to attain womanhood/come of age, either has the first menses, or has a wet dream/dreamed of having sex and there was ejaculation of semen (which ever is first), or if there were none of these two, has attained the age of fifteen years of age, and she is " 'A~qil"/sensible/sane in mind, and is "Mumaiz"/rational/able to distinguish between good and bad (these also applied to boys, except for the menses), then the girl or the boy is a  "Mukallaf"/obligated to observe the precepts/Rules of action of religion/Islam]. And the menopause, the final cessation of the menses, occurs normally between the age of 45 and 50.
The menses occurs differently to each woman, some have profuse, some have moderate, and some have scanty discharges. Some have the discharge for 3 days or more, and some for 7 days.
The menstruation occurs when the bleeding occurs from the wall of the womb (and in Islam/Arabic and also in Malay, it is called "Rohim") because the ovum/egg/female germ cell in the womb failed to fertilize/cause to be pregnant, and the blood is discharged as menses until the womb is empty. [This menses causes discomfort to the woman. If the bleeding does not cause any discomfort, than it is not menses/Haidh, but it is "Is-ti-ha~dhoh"/ haematuria, a sickness].
When a woman is having menses or is having 'Nifas'/ post-natal bleeding, she is prohibited from performing Solat, and when she is clean, she needs not "Qodhoo"/make up for the Solat she missed, and she is also prohibited from performing the Fast, but she will have to Qodhoo/make up for the days she missed the fast on other days after Ramadan that year but before the next Ramadan arrives, (we have discussed this in the previous sessions).
(to be continued).
صلى = a Waqif Jaiz sign.
Until we meet again in the next session, see you all Quran Lovers later.
والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Abdul Hamid Mohd Yusof.
