ألسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Dear Quran Lovers,
Let us continue to look into the explanation of the first phase of verse 221 of surah 2 Al-Baqoroh, the synopsis of Islam:
أعوذ بالله من الشيطان الرجيم
(221)The verse, "And certainly female-slave-Believer is better than Feminine-disbelievers even if she pleased you": As-Suddi said, "This verse was revealed because Abdullah bin Rawahah who had a black female-slave. (The Muslimin had slave/s when they fought the infidels and had captured their families. The family members of the infidels captured were made slaves. The slaves were not ill-treated but they were treated like their own kins. And they mingled with the slaves freely,  like that of their brothers and sisters). One day, Abdullah bin Rawahah became angry and had slapped his female-slave, then he was in fear for having slapped her, and went to the Prophet s.a.w. and told the Prophet s.a.w. what he had done to the slave-girl. The Prophet s.a.w. asked, "How is the girl?". Abdullah answered, "She fasts, performs Solat, and takes ablutions nicely, and she had confessed that there is no true "Ilah"/deity but Allah and you (O Muhammad) is His Messenger". The Prophet s.a.w. said, "O Abu 'Abdullah, she is a Muuminah/ Believer". 'Abdullah bin Rawahah  said, "By Allah who had sent you with the Truth, I will free her and will marry her". Then he went home, freed the black female-slave and then married her. Thence, many people among the Muslimin condemned his action by saying, "Why does he had to marry his own slave?". They/those who condemned, themselves and their children had married the Disbelievers because they wanted to gain the glory and of the high respect of their/ Disbelievers' ancestors. Thence Allah s.w.t. revealed this verse: "Marrying slaves is better than marrying Disbelievers even if they pleased you".
ج = a Waqof Jaiz sign.
