Let us cotinue with the مد = Madd:
(2) مد لين = Madd Lin = Softness Madd = a half emphatic letters represent by (1) و = Waw and ي = Ya when their preceding letter is marked with above sign, e.g. نَوْم = Naum, يَوْم = Yaum, بَيْت = Bait, لَيْل = Lail. They are to be pronounced to the length of 2 harakah = beats = dah dum.
(3) مد عارض للسكون = Madd `Aridh Lis-Suku~n. Transitory to Cease Madd = when making a stop or a pause at a word with a Madd/ long vowel or Lin/softness which has a marked letter subsequent to it, the Madd or the Lin, that marked letter should be silent, and when pausing, the Madd or the Lin is pronounced to 6 or 4 or 2 harakah = beats. e.g. اُلرَّحْمَانِ اُلرَّحِيمِ = we are pausing at اُلرَّحِيمِ = Ar-Roh*i~mi, "h*i~" is a Madd ashli, the letter after it is Mim below, but we pausing on it, so this Rule, Madd `Aridh Lis-Sukun applies, it is pronounced as, "Ar-Roh*i~~m", we pause with the length of 4 harakah = beats. (b) هُوَ خَيْرٌ = we are pausing at خَيْرٌ = KHoirun, "KHoi" is a Madd Lin, the letter after it is is Ro 2 front, but we are pausing on it, so this Rule, Madd `Aridh Lis-Sukun applies, it is pronounced as "KHoi~~~r", we are pausing with the length of 6 harakah = beats.
