بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم
ألسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
Dear Quran Lovers,
Let us continue to recite verse 187, surah 2 Al-Baqoroh (synopsis of Islam). Please refer to the text:
"Wa" = And, "Ku-lu~" = you (pl.) eat, "Wa" = and, "isy-ro-bu~" = you (pl.) drink, "Hat-ta~" = until, "Ya-ta-bai-ya-na" = it becomes clear, plain, "La" = to, "Ku-mu" = you (pl.), "al-KHoi-tu" = the thread, string, "al-Abb-ya-dhu" = the white, "Mi-na" = from, "al-KHoi-ti" = the threat, "al-As-wa-di" = the black, "Mi-na" = of, "al-Fajj-ri" = the dawn.
"Wa Ku-lu~ Wasy-ro-bu~ Hat-ta~ Ya-ta-bai-ya-na La Ku-mul-KHoi-tul-Abb-ya-dhu Mi-nal-KHoi-til-As-wa-di Mi-nal-Fajrr".  = (You may now have sex with your wives,) and eat and drink until it is plain and clear to you (pl.) the white thread/day from the black thread/night of the dawn.
صلى = a Waqof Jaiz sign.
ثُمَّ أَتِمُّواْ اُلصِّيَامَ إِلَى اُلَّيْلِ = "THum~ma A-tim~mush-SHi-ya~ma I-lal-Lai~l".  "THum~ma" = Then, "A-tim~mu~" = you (pl.) execute and complete, "ash-SHi-ya~ma" = the fast, "I-la~" = to, until, "al-Lai-li" = the night, sunset.
"THum~ma A-tim~mush-SHi-ya~ma I-lal-Lai~l".  = Then execute and complete the fast until the night/sunset.
ج = the Waqof Jaiz sign.
(In the beginning, the Muslimin fast from dawn till sunset. They broke fast and ate, drank and had sex untill the time for 'Isyaa or they fell asleep. Then they fast through out the night and the next day.
An Anshorian, named Qois ibnu Sharimah al-Anshori had worked while fasting in his farm for the whole day. When the time for breaking fast he went to his wife and asked if she had prepared some food for him. She replied, "No. But I am going now in search for food". While waiting for the food to come, Qois fell asleep. When the wife returned with food, seeing that Qois was sleeping, said, "What a pity. Why do you sleep?". The next morning, Qois went to work in his farm without eating any food since the early night before. In the afternoon, he fell unconscious. When he regained concsiousness, the Prophet s.a.w. came to see him, as soon as he s.a.w. heard that Qois fell unconscious in his farm. The Prophet s.a.w. asked him what had happened to him. Qois told the Prophet s.a.w. that he did not eat that night because he fell asleep while waiting for food. The Prophet s.a.w. felt very sad. Then Allah revealed this verse: "And eat and drink until it is plain and clear to you the white thread from the black thread of the dawn. Then execute and complete your fast until the night/sunset". This verse had brought joy and had made many people happy.
Imam Ahmad narrated from asy-Syaabi, from 'Adli ibnu Hatim who said, "When the verse, "And eat and drink until it is plain and clear to you the white thread from the black thread of the dawn" was revealed, I purposely took a white string and a black string, then I placed them under my pillow. Then I looked at them, and when I could see clearly the white string from the black string (in the darkness of the night), I refrained myself (from eating, drinking and having sex). The next morning I went to the Prophet s.a.w. and told him s.a.w. of what I did. He s.a.w. said, "Then, your pillow must be very wide. Really, what it  meant was the brightness of the day and the darkness of the night". (narrated by Bukhori and Muslim).  What the Prophet s.a.w. meant by, "your pillow must be very wide" was that if the white string and the black string mentioned in the verse which refered to the brightness of the day and the darkness of the night, then 'Adli's pillow was as wide as the East and the West.
We, the Muslimin are required to eat "Sah-hur"/last meal before dawn and it is Sunnah to do so. The Hadith from Anas bin Malik that the Prophet s.a.w. said, "Do eat Sahhur, because there is a Barakah/blessing in it". (narrated by Bukhori and Muslim).
From 'Amr ibnu al-'Ash that the Prophet s.a.w. said, "Truly, the difference between our fast and the fast of the People of the Scriptures is having Sahhur". (narrated by Muslim).
From Anas bin Malik, from Zaid bin Thabit who said, "We had Sahhur with the Prophet s.a.w. Then we performed Solat (Shubuh)". Anas then asked Zaid, "How long was it between the Adzan and the Sahhur?". Zaid replied, "About (reciting) fifty verses". [If we were to look at today's Muslim calender, the time after Sahhur is called "Imsak"/cessation (from eating, drinking and having sex) and it is 10 minutes before Adzan Shubuh).
(to be continued).
Until we meet again in the next session, see you all Quran Lovers later.
والسلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
